We had a great time at Gatlinburg, TN and the park views were stunning. I had so many chances to photograph streams, trees and vistas, especially the top of Clingman Dome, highest point in the park. This is another watercolor painting (my view) of many creeks that meander through the park.

Here we are in autumn! I plan a series on the Great Smokie Mountains. We have a fall trip planned and I want to do several paintings of these remarkable mountains, waterfalls and streams.
Cheery Blossoms 22 x28 watercolor

This piece began without much hope. I nearly put it away, or in “time out” as teachers like to say! After a few scrub-outs to make background changes, I kept working with it and am satisfied. I wanted more soft and hard edges, to move the viewer in and out of places in the overall composition. It’s useful to leave a few areas white, to mark light. And brushwork is one of the keys to a successful painting. I need to keep working on this fundamental step of watercolor painting.

I get caught up in the ocean sailing images: maybe deep down it’s what I’d love to try!
No. 17, The Road Hole, St. Andrews GC
August 2nd, 2010 — Uncategorized
The Open Championship in golf was played this year at the old course at St. Andrews, Scotland. TV networks allow us to see more and more detail of golf holes once known only to those who could go there. This is No. 17, par 4, known as the Road Hole, because a road into town is literally next to the green. And a player must tee off over a building! There is an enormous, treacherous, deep pot bunker next to the green, and the town is behind the 17th and 18th holes. This hole humbled many pros! I had fun painting it!

Morning in Acadia, ME
May 11th, 2010 — Uncategorized
Here is a typical rocky shore in Acadia National Park in Maine. There are so many outstanding coastal views. Our trip last fall to Maine and the Maritime Provinces provided stunning photographs and visual memories. In this piece, I moved a few things around. Well, maybe not the rocks, too hard to move!

Bass Head Lighthouse, Acadia National Park
February 25th, 2010 — Uncategorized
When we were in Maine last fall, we spent time in Acadia National Park. Many photos were taken, but this watercolor is from both my photos and “memory”. Unless you have a boat, you cannot see the Bass Head Lighthouse from this angle! We actually saw it at sunset, along with 10 other people! It must be one of the most photographed lighthouses. 22 x 28 (NTF).
Red Painted Barn - watercolor 10 x 13
February 14th, 2010 — Uncategorized
A trip out to VA countryside (before the big snow storms) was rewarded with sites of several old barns. You view how time and the elements change the hardware and wood components. And the plant life cycles every year, withers in fall and returns each spring.
